Case Study: JTD Solar 49.4 kWp installation at The Bath Soft Cheese Co., Park Farm, Kelston

JTD Solar Installation, Bristol-based renewable technology design and installation company, has completed a 49.4 kWp smart PV installation for The Bath Soft Cheese Co., using specialist equipment supplied by leading distributor Krannich Solar.

Graham and Hugh Padfield, owners of Park Farm in Kelston where the award-winning organic cheese producer is based, constructed a new factory building in 2014 with the intention of adding roof-top solar PV in 2015 to power the facility and reduce their energy costs.

“We had a large electricity bill”, explains Hugh, “primarily due to the need to maintain cool rooms for maturing cheese. The heat of the sun increases the energy required to achieve this, so harnessing solar energy to power the refrigeration equipment seemed a sensible solution. We also wanted to reduce the environmental impact of our cheese making and improve the efficiency of the new cheese dairy.”

JTD Solar were commissioned to install the system, which utilises 190 Axitec 260P AXIplus SE smart modules, across the building’s east-, west- and south-facing roof aspects. These modules, which are optimised by SolarEdge, can be individually controlled thanks to the intelligence of the smart technology that is integrated into the junction box of each panel.

Offering up to 20% more output per string than conventional modules, the AXIplus SE was the ideal choice for the Park Farm installation, where minimising the impact of shading was a primary objective from the project’s inception. Balancing a unique module layout with a desire for the installation to look aesthetically pleasing, JTD utilised two SolarEdge SE15k inverters and one SE16k – a three-phase inverter series specifically designed to work with power optimisers – to achieve superior solar energy harvesting.

The system also employs a Solar-Log 1200 Data Logger and is mounted using K2 Systems’ SolidRail Light and MiniRail solutions for trapezoidal roofs.

“JTD Solar were very quick to respond and helpful at explaining exactly what our options were”, explains farm owner Hugh: “They were flexible in their approach, which helped us keep the costs down, and they ensured that the work caused minimum disruption to the business, so it was a pleasure working with them.”

Jack Davis, Managing Director of JTD Solar Installation, worked closely with the sales and technical support teams at Krannich throughout the project development and speaks highly of the service provided by every department: “Multiple amendments to the quote were required throughout the design process, while we developed the optimal system for the client, but the excellent level of service provided by our account manager and the rest of the Krannich team remained consistent throughout. They have the right people for the job – in every department from sales to technical, logistics and marketing.”

JTD Solar specialises in the delivery of large scale and domestic PV solar installation, design and commission. They operate throughout Bristol, Bath and the South West, and pride themselves on offering end-users an outstanding product range and superb value for money.

“Krannich introduced us to the AXIplus SE optimised module solution and help us to stay a step ahead, which is what an installer needs as industry technology moves forward”, explains Jack. “They offer competitively priced high-end products and their efficient logistics and customer service ensured the modules arrived from Europe swiftly, enabling us to complete the project on schedule.

“The quality of service we always receive from the Krannich team resounded through the ease with which we completed this installation - on time and using some of the best products on the market. Our client is also over the moon!”
